The Joys of Writing

I love to read, as I've mentioned before. But because I enjoy a specific genre, I sometimes get a little annoyed that some questions I always have are never answered, or that those answers are unimaginative and overused.

So, I decided to write my own book. Its still only a rough outline in my head, but I've recently been able to flesh out some important parts on paper. The most difficult thing for me is that I normally write very well when I'm editing, and find it hard to start from scratch.

Thats why, a few weeks ago, I bought a book to help with writers block, "The Writer's Idea Book" by Jack Heffron. Its pretty good at giving you a start direction for your thoughts. Not many of the prompts helped directly with my work, but I sometimes go back to read an idea and incorporate it into a character or a subplot. There are even some that I've put aside for future books.

I've been lucky the past few days - the muse has seen fit to visit me, and I've gotten a lot off work done. Its one of the main reasons I haven't been around to blog lately. I was getting a headache, and whenever I get a headache, I can't keep working on my book, because then I'll just ruin it.

What's my book about? Well, I don't want to ruin the magic of an untold story, but its a fantasy young adult novel about elves, humans, and mythical creatures. Sounds stupid? I hope not. I have personally been waiting for a book like the one I'm writing for years, and I hope a lot of people read it and everybody likes it.
Well, I've just thought up a great scene for the book, so off to work!

Delicious Things That Are Unique

Many people don't realize that there are several different dialects of Spanish. I've always known this because my parents are from different hispanic cultures. My mother is from Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States, and my father is Mexican. By and large, the language is the same, but there are some words thats differ.

Like empanadas. In Puerto Rico, they are thinly pounded steaks breaded and pan fried, served with rice and beans, no gravy. In Mexico, they are meat or fruit pastries. In Puerto Rico, those pastries are called pastellios.

I absolutely love both kinds of empanadas. In fact, I love both Mexican and Puerto Rican food. But I especially enjoy going to Puerto Rico, because I still have family there. Its awesome going around with them - they know all the tourist places, and all the hidden gems. In Puerto Rico, they sell produce from the median on all the major rules. We even used to buy pizzas from them! And tourists - here's a little informational nugget for you: Vendors who know you are a tourist and can tell you can't speak or understand spanish will charge you more for the things you buy. Trust me, because my mother would tell my sister and I to not speak because when we got older, we forgot our spanish, and she didn't want the prices raised. So, if you go to Puerto Rico (or anywhere with a different language from yours) learn the basics of the language so you don't get ripped off.

Also, I just got some Maltas!!!! Looove me some maltas! Its a non-alcoholic malt beverage with very little carbonation. Its delish! I grew up with them, so I love them, but my husband and my father don't care for them - I guess its something you have to grow up with, something to get used to. Oh well. More for me!

Yum!

I just made enchiladas! I've only made them once before, and that was when I first married my husband, David. That time, I used too much salt, forgetting to account for the saltiness of the onions (yes, they are salty) and green olives. Despite that, David LOVED them. Every time we went to a mexican restaurant, ate at my parents house (they are hispanic), or even saw a commercial for mexican food, he would turn and give me a dirty look and complain that I haven't made enchiladas in forever.

So today, I all of a sudden decided I felt like making enchiladas. I headed to the store to pick up the ingredients and just finished putting them in the oven. David got uber excited when he figured out what I was doing.

... Time Passes ...

O.M.G. They are delicious!!!! Here is the recipe for my enchiladas:

Chicken Enchiladas

1 lb chicken breast, boneless, skinless

1 cup chopped onion

1 cup diced green olives

4 cups cheese (I love cheese - just use however much you want of that, but you'll need at least 2 cups)

10 - 16 regular size corn tortillas

1 14oz can enchilada sauce

Slice and cook chicken, then take two forks and pull apart each piece, shredding the chicken. DO NOT SALT ANYTHING! A little bit of Mrs. Dash is fine, but thats it. Lightly spray your 3 quart pan with cooking spray, then spoon about 1/2 a cup of enchilada sauce onto the bottom - helps to keep the tortillas from sticking. Preheat oven to 375. Warm up the tortillas slightly - it helps to keep them from falling apart as you make them. In each tortilla, place a bit of cheese, chicken, onion, and green olive, roll it closed, then place each one seam down in the pan. Once done, pour leftover enchilada sauce on top, sprinkle cheese (however much you want - lots, in my case), extra onions and olives over that, then cover with aluminum foil, bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool for a bit, then serve.

Enjoy!

The Excitement of a Good Book

I love love LOVE to read. Its actually quite bad. I can read a book with 700 pages in a day if its good enough to keep my interest, if it keeps the suspense, action, drama, or mystery going with little downtime describing the scenery in minute and unnecessary detail, or waxing eloquently about love or attraction. Don't get me wrong, its important for every book to have some sort of romantic angle to keep it balanced, but I'm not all about gooeyness, making out, or hot and steamy sex (unless thats what I'm specifically looking for).

My favorite type of book to read is Science Fiction Fantasy in the Young Adult Section. Old enough to understand the varying types of love, but young enough not to be too sexual, unless the book is geared to bring awareness to some topic within that theme. Of course, I do venture out into other types, for some well roundedness, but most of the books I have purchased over the years are within the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre, and mainly in the teen section.

I know, I know, why teens when you're 22 years old, married, blah blah blah? Because its just so good! Even in the most heavy, diffficult situations, the story feels light, like I'm not going to fall asleep from the weighty subjects these books can set forth. Everything still looks simple, terrible choices are not considered, and as odd as it may sound, younger people, by and large, always have a hopeful hopelessness. By that I mean that though everything seems like its falling apart and the protagonist has fallen at the feet of the antagonist, you can't help knowing that everything will get better, and you know that the protagonist knows it too, but just hasn't gotten to that moment of enlightenment and fullfilment.

I just recently finished the first book in a long time that has kept me flipping each page fevershly, has made me yell out in realization, surprise, excitement, and horror. That book is "Eon: Dragoneye Reborn" by Alison Goodman. Some may be deterred by the difference from most every book in that Section, but its a good difference, I promise, making it stand out every time I went into Borders to buy books. Its a story based on the Chinese Zodiac, and from there all the characters, plot, climax, twists and turns flow. I loved the fresh look at such an ancient civilization, seen through the eyes of a 16 year old girl pretending to be a 12 year old boy. Because of the unique baseline of the book, and the different way that Dragons are seen and employed, I, for the most part, could not see what was coming, so therefore I had to find out, and so I kept reading. I have not loved the telling of a story so much in a long time. I simply CANNOT wait for the sequel to come out. Don't fear: its only a 2 part series.

Why Does the Cow Jump Over the Moon?

Is it in California, with the Happy Cows? Is it happy to be in California? Maybe it was the cow from Vietnam who sent in that video, hoping to be chosen to go to California and be a Happy Cow.

(I'm talking about the California Cheese Happy Cow commercials)

And what about her boyfriend? Its a long trip to jump over the moon, she would want some company. And some food. Also, she would be so confused when she came back, wondering what happened to the dish and the spoon.

I'm just saying.
